Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!
I'm thrilled to be working this year with fifth-, sixth, and seventh-graders as we become more insightful readers, more skillful writers, more observant listeners, and more powerful speakers.
During our two class periods daily, we'll enjoy ongoing combinations of whole-group instruction, collaborative projects, and individual assignments -- all designed with the goal of communicating effectively and thoughtfully.
With each assignment, we'll "begin with the end in mind" in setting goals and understanding the focus needed. And when an assignment is completed, we'll reflect on our progress with solid doses of self-assessment: What skills have helped me improve in this area of study? How can I apply this classroom learning to life? What more might I explore about this topic to strengthen my abilities?
In short, whether working on discerning an author's theme, crafting a thesis statement for a paper, studying the etymology of vocabulary words, or evaluating a speaker's tone and word choice, we'll be busy in our call to use well the many branches of communication to serve God by serving others.
